PRESS RELEASE

GLMCC Forms Exciting Partnership with Islamic Relief

Green Lane Mosque and Community Centre (GLMCC) has partnered with Islamic Relief (IR), one of the world’s largest faith-based NGO’s (non-Governmental Organisations) as its primary charity partner for 2019.

Since 1984, Islamic Relief has saved and transformed the lives of over 117 million people around the world and is a member of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC); as well as being a signatory to the Code of Conduct for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

The partnership was formalised by the signing of a contract at a ceremony held at GLMCC in Birmingham on Tuesday 9th of April. Naser Haghamed (CEO), Tufail Hussain (UK Director) and Zia Salik (National Fundraising Manager) attended the ceremony on behalf of Islamic Relief.

The focal point for the 2019 campaigns will be the ongoing Syrian crisis, which is now in its 8th year, as well as focusing on projects in Yemen, Myanmar, Palestine, and Pakistan.

Tufail Hussain said “It’s an absolute honour to be working with the Green Lane Masjid and Community Centre. This partnership brings together two organisations that were proudly founded here in Birmingham. The amazing and generous Green Lane Masjid community will help us to build on our life saving work in some of the most difficult humanitarian situations. The partnership will also see us work together on delivering vital services for the community of Birmingham.”

Ishfaq Ahmed, the current head of Task Force GLM (the humanitarian aid arm of GLMCC) commented on how excited he was at the prospect of working with Islamic Relief.

“Islamic Relief is an international humanitarian organisation that provides humanitarian relief around the globe, regardless of race, political affiliation, gender or belief. So naturally it made sense for us to partner with a like-minded organisation that shares the same values and objectives as Task Force GLM”

Kamran Hussain the recently appointed general manager at GLMCC mentioned that, “After meeting with Islamic Relief I was very impressed with their governance and professionalism. Their auditing software was very comprehensive and thorough. I was reassured that every penny given to them would be accounted for and spent on the project”.

Over the past 5 years, Task Force GLM, a volunteer-based organisation has raised in excess of £5 million pounds and has supported aid efforts in over 15 countries around the world. Some of the key projects have included; the Saving Syria campaign, which distributed over 6,000 tonnes of flour to Syrian refugees as well as orphan and widow support programmes.

More recently, the Task Force team travelled to the refugee camp of Doriz in Iraq for a refugee shelter project. The camp has a population of more than 40,000, making it the biggest refugee camp in Iraq. With the help of the Birmingham and wider community, the taskforce helped to fund the construction and movement 131 refugee families out of refugee tents into more purpose built solid structures.

GLMCC is also registered with the fundraising regulator to ensure that all its fundraising practices are legal, open, honest and respectful.
