Mental Health Mondays and GLM HEAR4U Listening service launched

Mental Health Monday is a campaign aimed at supporting those struggling with their mental health during lockdown. Through starting conversations and sharing uplifting posts, we hope that the community know that we are here from them.

In response to our social media Mental Health Mondays campaign, we have launched a helpline listening service to provide emotional support to the community aged 16+ during this trying time of COVID-19.

This helpline is a free, confidential, listening service, delivered by trained/qualified listeners to support our community during this time of isolation, uncertainty and change.

Gift Aid It!Add 25% more to your donation at no cost to you. A Gift Aid declaration allows Green Lane Masjid to claim tax back on eligible donations. It means that for every £1 you donate to Green Lane Masjid we can claim back 25p, at no extra cost to you.

By ticking the "Yes" box, I agree I would like Green Lane Masjid to reclaim the tax on all qualifying donations I have made, as well as any future donations, until I notify them otherwise. I understand that if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations in that tax year I may be asked to pay any difference. I understand that Green Lane Masjid will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid does not cost you a penny more, but can add an additional 25p to every £1 you donate. When Green Lane Masjid receives a donation from a UK taxpayer, we're entitled to claim an amount of tax (calculated at the basic rate of income tax in that year) paid on that donation. Once you have given your permission for us to do this on your behalf, there is no need for you to do anything else.

All that is required is that you must be a taxpayer and that would have paid or will pay sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover all the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year. Please note that it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

The amount of tax we claim will be 25% of the total value of your donations in that tax year. Furthermore, if you are a higher taxpayer, you are also entitled to claim the difference between the basic rate which we will claim and the amount of tax you have actually paid. For further details on how you can do this, please contact your tax office. If your tax situation changes and your gifts will no longer be eligible for the Gift Aid scheme please contact us and we will amend your record accordingly.

The Guardian newpaper goes inside Green Lane Masjid

The UK’s mosque of the year, Green Lane Masjid in Birmingham, was among the first to shut its doors to worshippers after the coronavirus pandemic was announced – well before such gatherings were banned in the UK.

But their work at the centre of the community continued, expanded and evolved.

Richard Sprenger speaks with Saleem Ahmed, head of welfare at the mosque, about the adaptations they have made to continue to serve their local community, Muslim and non-muslim alike

Make your homes a qiblah and establish the prayer*

وَاجْعَلُوا بُيُوتَكُمْ قِبْلَةً وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ

In light of the recent Mosque closures, we should all reflect on this verse.

Allah سبحانه و تعالى says: “And We inspired Moosa and his brother (saying): ‘Take dwellings for your people in Egypt, and make your homes as places for your worship, and perform the salah, and give glad tidings to the believers.’” [10:87].

*What is meant by ‘taking the home as a place of worship’?*

Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “They were commanded to take their dwellings as places of prayer. [lit. mosques].”

Ibn Katheer said: “This was because of the intensity of the tribulation that they were facing from Pharaoh and his people. They were commanded to pray much, as Allah says: ‘O you who believe! Seek help with patience and prayer…’ [2:153], and as it was reported in the hadeeth that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he was distressed by something, would pray.
