Zakah, unlike any other Sadaqah, is an obligatory form of worship. Like Salah it has conditions which must be met, responsibilities which must be discharged and crucially – to have the correct intention of undertaking this great act of worship.
At GLMCC we provide a zakah service that will enable Muslims to fulfil this obligation. We encourage Muslims to give locally to aid locally as per prophetic tradition. GLMCC has been holding a zakah service since 2011. The majority of this money has been given to local people, and sometimes we receive cases nationally who we are obliged to help and assist. In short, GLMCC collects zakah funds, processes applications and distributes to those eligible to receive zakah.
GLMCC also works with external organisations based in the UK and abroad which are specifically setup as zakah services, and with other charity organisations. GLMCC works with these service provides to refer cases, to receive financial support specific to zakah, or to distribute zakah that GLMCC has received as part of the zakah process.
People want to give to their own communities so GLMCC has a dedicated and committed team to ensure that we are providing a first-rate service that is also carrying out its duties responsibly.
Umar (RA) was once asked what to do with the Zakah collected from Bedouin Arabs. He answered, “By Allah, I shall render the Sadaqah to themselves, until each of them becomes the owner of a hundred camels, male or female.” (Al Mussannaf Abdur Razzaq)
GLMCC is committed to becoming a fully-fledged zakah provider and distributor, in accordance with the Quran and Sunnah, in Birmingham, and the UK at large.
Applying for Zakah
The eligibility criteria for the recipients of zakah are stipulated in the Quran by Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala) Himself. Thus, emphasising to us the importance of giving and receiving zakah.
“Sadaqah (i.e. Zakah) are for the poor, and the needy, and those employed to administer [the funds], and those whose hearts have been reconciled [to the truth], and for those in bondage, and those in debt, and in the cause of Allah, and for the wayfarer; [thus is it] ordained by Allah, and Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom.” (Surah Al-Taubah 9:60.)
